The Agentic Development Lifecycle
The agentic development lifecycle is the end-to-end process for creating, deploying, operating, and retiring AI systems that act rather than only answer. It connects model selection, orchestration, harness and context engineering, memory, guardrails, observability, and automated workflows into a repeatable business process. Model selection identifies the large language model or models used by an agent. Orchestration coordinates interactions between models, tools, and data sources. Harness and context engineering structure inputs and surrounding software. Memory retains prior interactions. Guardrails enforce safety and policy limits. Observability monitors agent behavior and performance. Automated workflows connect agent actions to enterprise systems.
Organizations apply this lifecycle to govern autonomous agents that pursue business objectives. The process determines how reliably agents advance organizational goals and how risks are controlled across data and AI governance. Data governance and data contracts establish rules for information quality, access, and sharing. Executives, middle management, compliance officers, risk managers, and technology leaders use the lifecycle to align autonomous systems with regulatory and strategic requirements. Because agents act independently, oversight spans design through retirement rather than deployment alone.
